Walsh helps boost output for women on Sky 1

Sky 1 is upping its female-skewing entertainment output with a documentary fronted by Girls Aloud singer Kimberley Walsh, and a reality-makeover hybrid based on the growing British trend for US-style proms.

Promzillas (working title) is a 6 x 60-minute series produced by Betty. Due to air later this year, it follows the demands of a string of prom divas who are desperate to become the belle of the bad-taste balls.

The series, which is exec produced by Sarah Freethy, will also offer less confident teens a prom makeover by a dedicated team of stylists.

The same broadcaster has also commissioned a 1 x 60-minute documentary from Ten Alps, which is hosted by Walsh and traces the history of jeans.

The show, provisionally titled Jean Evolution, sees Walsh travel across the US and Europe to uncover the beginnings of denim and its adoption by cowboys, before meeting designers and manufacturers who will offer tips and industry insight.

The doc is due to start filming in April and will air later in the year. It is being exec produced by Sarah Murch from Ten Alps and Lesley Douglas from Globe Productions.

Both series were ordered by Celia Taylor, head of features and factual for Sky 1, 2 & 3.

Being surrounded by poverty and death in Uganda was a life changing experience 
for Kimberley Walsh.

Visiting a hospital brought home the seriousness of Sport Relief’s much needed work in the region.

‘I was told the story of a woman called Jacqueline who was pregnant and had contracted malaria,’ says Kimberley, 28.

‘She arrived there two days before we did, but her husband didn’t get her to hospital in time. She had anaemia and her conditioned snowballed until she was convulsing. Both her and her baby died.

‘They had to remove the baby, and the poor husband had to bury them both. I found the fact that preventing their deaths could have been as simple as having a mosquito net so hard to get my head around.’

Kimberley admits that on occasion her emotions got the better of her.

‘I did break down and I had to go outside to pull myself together,’ she says.

‘I didn’t feel I had the right to cry, though, and I had to remind myself that these people are dealing with it everyday, so they don’t need me getting upset about it.’
